Are Nexus One Phones built like crap?
February 17, 2010They must be. HTC should be ashamed of itself. I just dropped my Nexus One from no more than 18″. It fell screen down, on a tile floor. The back cover popped off and the battery came out. The touch screen glass didn’t break, the LCD underneath it did. This is just awful. HTC sucks at making phones if they can’t withstand a single short fall. The Nexus One sucks if it can’t withstand a single short fall. I dropped my old blackberry millions of times. I’ve seen iPhones take some serious falls. I’ve taken really good care of this great phone, and one little mistake, it’s dead.
If you were like me and thought the HTC Nexus One was going to be a really tough, iPhone killing machine, you had good reason. Even Google markets the Nexus One as tough phone — watch this video of them putting it through stress tests.
All I can say is this sucks. I also think it sucks because sucks + a brand name with yields great google results helping people find flaws and document them. Hopefully HTC can address this issue. I am still getting over the shock of this, but tomorrow I will call HTC and start the official process of trying to get this fixed. I have a feeling they don’t cover such things in the 12-month warranty and will try to charge me to fix the device. This isn’t going to be fun. Sucks.
Update 2/18/2009: Spoke to HTC today. My phone is going back to them to get diagnosed. They estimated between $90-380!!! I will say they were very pleasant to deal with, but weren’t able to get me a loaner phone or do anything special. I expressed my deep dissatisfaction with the drop tolerance of the nexus one and compared it to blackberrys and iPhones… We will have to see what they say once a technician is able to check it out, will probably be next Tuesday before I hear. That is going to be my time to see how customer service oriented HTC is. Lets hope the best.
