Quick post here to let anyone seeking fall colors in Arizona that Escudilla Mountain is ablaze in golden aspens right now. I haven’t finished a full portfolio from my trip, but wanted to share a few shots from the area in the event any googlers out there are wondering if they should go. The mountain seems to be peaking right about now — first week of October 2009. Some patches of aspens have already dropped their leaves while others are still green, but the bulk of the mountain is gorgeous!

Here is my lovely campsite looking North to Escudilla Mountain. Excellent sunrise and sunset spot!

Other areas like Fossil Springs, Mogollon Rim, Oak Creek Canyon are probably a week or two out from peak. I did some scouting on my trip and found Escudilla (at ~8000 feet and higher) the best. Check these links from the US forest service, however remember that these reports are spotty at best!

I spent last weekend at Fossil Springs with the Arizona Wilderness Coalition picking up trash and breaking up fire rings. Fossil Springs is one of Arizona’s great wonders — a truly remarkable place. Much of the canyon is designated a federal wilderness area and thanks to the hard work of the AWC Fossil Creek is now Arizona’s second wild and scenic river.

Here is a slide-show of my still photos from the trip.

And here is a video I made with my Canon G10 doing some underwater video of the spring. Make sure the HQ is on for the best quality!

I finally got around to making my time lapse video from my trip to Utah in early August. Been so busy!! Time lapse is fun, but it takes a lot of patience to shoot and a few hours at least in Sony Vegas to render. Just to make it longer than a 20 second video, I peppered in some of my photos from the trip to and tried my hand at some Ken Burns effects.

Alpine Awesome in Utah from Jason Corneveaux on Vimeo.

The 2 of the 3 time lapse sequences were all shot with my Canon 40D in sRAW (one shot in jpg) and triggered with a Canon TC-80N3 intervalometer. sRAW files were batch tonemapped in photomatix. Vimeo won’t allow me to embed the HD version, so if you want to see it, check it out here: www.vimeo.com/6441791

I’m back from an amazing adventure to the high mountains of Utah. Spent some time with my dad and step-mom, and captured some great new images. Much of my previous photography has focused on desert southwest subjects, so this trip was particularly fun because I got to visit some places of my childhood and experience them from behind the camera lens. It sure was a nice time!

I have the pictures available for viewing and print ordering in my zenfolio gallery here: photos.corneveaux.com/alpine Below is also a nice sideshow if you prefer.

And finally, here is one of my ‘ridiculuoramas’ — a 360° panorama taken from the top of Mount Timpanogos. Sitting by the hut at the top you can see my hiking buddy Szabi. Please note you have to scroll to the left to view the entire image.

Strobist info: 285 HV on shelf above beer pointing straight down on them at 1/16th power. 580 EX II behind the salsa and aimed at the wall behind the beer, with purpleish gel at 1/16th power. Skyport triggers.

As I post this, I’m realizing that I enjoy photographing my beer almost as much as I enjoy drinking it. I have a lot of shots of beer cans, mugs, glasses, chalaices and goblets.. This from the archives, one of my favorite shots of beer for breakfast walking around Antwerp, Belgium -

I’m a little behind on my postings, but here are some cool shots from a couple weekends ago spent the weekend up on the Mogollon Rim. Our 1st night we camped right on the rim and found there was a pair of nesting red tailed hawks in the cliffs directly below us. I sat and watched them for hours. I couldn’t see the chicks, but could hear them below me whenever mom or dad came in with some food.

I caught this shot (made famous on Just JoeP’s blog) of one with a snake in its beak just before it dove into the nest to feed the youngsters.

I guess since this was a trip for Mother’s day I should show some of the group shots of us:

I recently took a trip to meet my dad and photographer friend Charlie Wood for another birthday hike. This was my 27th, and is the 3rd birthday expedition I’ve done in as many years. Last year was Canyonlands with Charlie and the year before was Zion.

This year, I met the guys in Escalante, UT. I drove over the ‘short’ route via the Smokey Mountain Road. This is a nearly 80 mile off road jaunt, over the Kaiparowitz Plateau. My first night was spent sleeping in the bed of my truck along the road:

Just to the right of this picture is the lights of Page, AZ. I’m perched on a large bentonite cliff — this is where the original was filmed….

The next morning I hauled butt over the sometimes washed out Smokey Mountain Road (see map) and was the 1st one to the ranger station in Escalante. Smokey Mountain road is beautiful, long, rugged, and remote. My kind of place.

We hiked into Coyote Gulch in the late afternoon, and had to search for a while to find a camp. Unfortunately, this American gem has been discovered. We had the displeasure of camping near a family with 2 small children who made so much noise it nearly spoiled the trip. We spent the 2nd day hiking down towards the Escalante river, but never made it — spent too much time photographing along the way…

After Coyote, my dad and I spent some time exploring Capitol Reef National Park using his wife’s charming home in Bicknell as basecamp.

Here is the map with my GPS tracks from the trip:

You can download my GPS tracks as a Google Earth KML here

Have you ever been touring about and seen something you thought might
make a good picture? Well, this was one such case, and OH MAN was it a
gem… My mom and I found these road displays at near the entrance to Great Basin National Park just outside Baker Nevada…..

That old car…

I saw this old car from the road and thought it would make a cool picture with the puffy cumulus clouds and the rugged mountains in the backdrop…

Here’s looking at you

And then I got the first hint something is amiss…

The Sickness

I freaking love it. Thats a horse skeleton…

Totally awesome

Somebody out in the Great Basin is really, really sick. My kind of person!! This had my mom and I giggling for a long time.

I wonder how many New York minds have been BLOWN by this site…

The end of the road

Sometimes you have to know when it’s best to stop and have a drink of water. This guy may have been on his way to get some and got lost. After all, judging by his vehicle it was probably before the days of GPS.

Drink More Water!

Or you’ll end up like this fella!

Too Tall Tony

What can I say… This one had me dying — I almost drove off the road when I caught it. Had to turn around and get out to pay my respects to Too Tall Tony.

Alien in the bushes!

Look out, they probe in uncomfortable places!

MMMmmm Mississippi Mud!

Also on the road leading up to Lehman Caverns… The folks in the Baker Nevada area sure seem to have fun screwing with tourists.

Wow, it has taken 3 months to get this series of photos up and ready to post. It takes quite a bit of time to churn out web worthy content like this!! Click the mosaic any of the image links or the direct link here to view this stunning album–

corneveaux.com/gallery2/v/GE2

Anyway, this is my 2nd ‘Great Escape’ adventure to Southern Utah for Spring Break. This is only my 2nd year doing photography and I am starting to amaze myself with what I can pull off. Three years ago I took my first amazing digital photo in Wire Pass. I took this shot with a cheap Pentax camera, no real thought about exposure, dynamic range, composition—-

The year after this trip I was back to Southern UItah – this time with a 4×4 and a little better point and shoot camera. The photos were better as my skills had developed in the intervening time..

And now the Great Escape 2.0 – my skills have really improved and I have moved into an entry level Canon SLR camera. I owe a lot of gratitude to a number of people who have helped, funded, inspired and encouraged me to pursue my photographic exploits.

This was a 9-day, 1600 mile loop around Lake Powell from Phoenix. About 800 miles driven were off road. Saw some of the most beautiful places the world has to offer.

I came home with over 28 gigs of photos, some 7,500 frames. Granted, ~4,000 of those frames were for 2 different timelapse sequences, but yea, a bunch of photos…

Back from a trip on a photography excursion to Hunt’s Mesa in Monument Valley with my friend Charles Wood last weekend. Monument Valley is largely closed to the public so this was a trip guided by a local Navajo Tom Philips. I really enjoyed the trip – short but since Tom and his crew drive you right to the good spots, drop you off to photograph sunset while they set-up camp and cook makes this a perfect way to shoot over 600 frames in less than 24 hours. Furthermore, Tom is a photographer himself, so he provides great local knowledge with the photographer’s eye.

Here is his website: monumentvalley.com

I did the overnight the Hunt’s Mesa Photo Tour. Expensive but well worth it. Without Tom, I would never get to see the back country of the 8th Wonder of the World.

Click the mosaic below to see my images from the trip:

Also, since there were 8 people in our group, 4 of whom are photographers – there wasn’t enough room in Tom’s vehicles for everyone and our tons of cameras, tripods, and other photonut gear – I got to take my truck on the 3 hour 4×4 trail to the top of the mesa!! So awesome!!!!! Few white guys have had the fortune of backcountry wheeling in Monument Valley!

You can also download the Google Earth KML file of my GPS tracks here —>

Or, you can view the tracks in a google map —-> HERE!
