Here is my lovely campsite looking North to Escudilla Mountain. Excellent sunrise and sunset spot!

Other areas like Fossil Springs, Mogollon Rim, Oak Creek Canyon are probably a week or two out from peak. I did some scouting on my trip and found Escudilla (at ~8000 feet and higher) the best. Check these links from the US forest service, however remember that these reports are spotty at best!

• Kaibab National Forest

The 2 of the 3 time lapse sequences were all shot with my Canon 40D in sRAW (one shot in jpg) and triggered with a Canon TC-80N3 intervalometer. sRAW files were batch tonemapped in photomatix. As I post this, I’m realizing that I enjoy photographing my beer almost as much as I enjoy drinking it. I have a lot of shots of beer cans, mugs, glasses, chalaices and goblets.. This from the archives, one of my favorite shots of beer for breakfast walking around Antwerp, Belgium -

I caught this shot (made famous on Just JoeP’s blog) of one with a snake in its beak just before it dove into the nest to feed the youngsters.

I guess since this was a trip for Mother’s day I should show some of the group shots of us:

I recently took a trip to meet my dad and photographer friend Charlie Wood for another birthday hike. This was my 27th, and is the 3rd birthday expedition I’ve done in as many years. Last year was Canyonlands with Charlie and the year before was Zion.

This year, I met the guys in Escalante, UT. I drove over the ‘short’ route via the Smokey Mountain Road. This is a nearly 80 mile off road jaunt, over the Kaiparowitz Plateau. My first night was spent sleeping in the bed of my truck along the road:

Just to the right of this picture is the lights of Page, AZ. I’m perched on a large bentonite cliff — this is where the original was filmed….

The next morning I hauled butt over the sometimes washed out Smokey Mountain Road (see map) and was the 1st one to the ranger station in Escalante. Smokey Mountain road is beautiful, long, rugged, and remote. My kind of place.

We hiked into Coyote Gulch in the late afternoon, and had to search for a while to find a camp. Unfortunately, this American gem has been discovered. We had the displeasure of camping near a family with 2 small children who made so much noise it nearly spoiled the trip. We spent the 2nd day hiking down towards the Escalante river, but never made it — spent too much time photographing along the way…

After Coyote, my dad and I spent some time exploring Capitol Reef National Park using his wife’s charming home in Bicknell as basecamp.

Sometimes you have to know when it’s best to stop and have a drink of water. This guy may have been on his way to get some and got lost. After all, judging by his vehicle it was probably before the days of GPS.

Anyway, this is my 2nd ‘Great Escape’ adventure to Southern Utah for Spring Break. This is only my 2nd year doing photography and I am starting to amaze myself with what I can pull off. Three years ago I took my first amazing digital photo in Wire Pass. I took this shot with a cheap Pentax camera, no real thought about exposure, dynamic range, composition—-

The year after this trip I was back to Southern UItah – this time with a 4×4 and a little better point and shoot camera. The photos were better as my skills had developed in the intervening time..

And now the Great Escape 2.0 – my skills have really improved and I have moved into an entry level Canon SLR camera. I owe a lot of gratitude to a number of people who have helped, funded, inspired and encouraged me to pursue my photographic exploits.

This was a 9-day, 1600 mile loop around Lake Powell from Phoenix. About 800 miles driven were off road. Saw some of the most beautiful places the world has to offer.

I came home with over 28 gigs of photos, some 7,500 frames. Granted, ~4,000 of those frames were for 2 different timelapse sequences, but yea, a bunch of photos…

I did the overnight the Hunt’s Mesa Photo Tour. Expensive but well worth it. Without Tom, I would never get to see the back country of the 8th Wonder of the World.

Also, since there were 8 people in our group, 4 of whom are photographers – there wasn’t enough room in Tom’s vehicles for everyone and our tons of cameras, tripods, and other photonut gear – I got to take my truck on the 3 hour 4×4 trail to the top of the mesa!! So awesome!!!!! Few white guys have had the fortune of backcountry wheeling in Monument Valley!
